What If Women Designed the City? Hosted by Women in Lighting

  • RIAS Rutland Square Edinburgh, Scotland United Kingdom (map)

How can cities be greener, wilder, more inclusive, liveable, appropriately lit and poetic? Join international urbanist May East for a conversation inspired by her acclaimed book What if Women Designed the City? Rooted in the richness of women’s everyday life experiences, the book offers a compelling perspective on urban development through the eyes of women from diverse countries and backgrounds, revealing untapped potentials grounded in the uniqueness of their neighbourhoods.

Drawing on in-depth walking interviews with 274 women, the book presents 33 leverage points for how policymakers, urban professionals, and communities can intervene in planning systems—so that cities work better for women and girls, ultimately benefiting everyone.

The conversation will explore how cities—and specifically lighting design—can be reimagined through the lens of women and girls’ lived experience. It highlights how traditional planning has often overlooked gender differences, resulting in environments that feel less safe and accessible at night. Using examples from Vienna, Umeå, Melbourne, and Delhi, it shows how lighting design influences perception, behaviour, and access to public space.

It also presents gender-sensitive lighting as a powerful leverage point for creating lively cities. By focusing on visibility, spatial clarity, and social use—not just brightness—lighting can reduce fear, support mobility, and enable greater participation in urban life after dark. Ultimately, designing with women in mind leads to safer, more welcoming environments that benefit everyone.
